Listening to salsa teaches you how salsa songs are built, until you start sensing where the music will go next. Learning about the great musicians, their views and the themes they sing about, can do a lot for your musicality.
But all music follows patterns. Almost everything does. Even walking: the left goes in front of the right, then the other way round. Yet no two people walk the same, even when they follow the same pattern.
So you can find inspiration in any genre. After all, your dance is about getting in touch with your inner self and sharing those feelings with your partner.
